Freedom Chess Academy and The Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility at The University of Alabama began a collaboration in January 2010 to teach chess within Tuscaloosa Magnet Middle School. Through the Every Move Counts program, University of Alabama students take a service-learning course examining the value of chess in education and teach the game to children. The program has since expanded to Oak Hill School and other grades within the magnet school. In 2011 FCA interacts with Every Move Counts through guest lectures, organizing scholastic interschool tournaments, and augmenting the Every Move Counts classes with special classes for intermediate and advanced players.
Freedom Chess Academy is pleased to have received the support of the Tuscaloosa Sports Foundation in bringing the 2010 Alabama State Chess Championship to Tuscaloosa. Their financial support allowed us to take the risk of offering larger than normal cash prizes to attract more players. This investment paid off for the community and for the students we serve when 140 chess players plus parents and other family members arrived in Tuscaloosa for the event.
This is the state federation that coordinates with schools and local chess clubs and chess organizations to promote chess and organize tournaments in Alabama. It provides both marketing assistance for tournaments as well as a network of other knowledgeable chess organizers in the state. It organizes state championships, sponsors scholarships, and is recognized by the US Chess Federation as the official state chess sanctioning body.
2010 supporters of Freedom Chess Academy include Alabama Credit Union, DCH Health System, McAllister's Deli, Moe's Southwest Grill, and Innisfree Irish Pub, and others.
